First and foremost, keep it short and informative. You may write a book about yourself, however, remember that the recruiter has specific demands. If a PHP Developer is being looked for, there is no point telling that your height is 180 cm. Plus, your skills cannot be judged by knowing whether you are married or single. Remember, the recruiter needs to know whether he can profit by your association with his company. Enumerated below are the sub-headings that cannot be compromised to be a part of your resume.

Objective-
Tell the employer that you are keen to work and use your skills for the benefit of the company. Though words can not prove your ability to stand firm in tough conditions, they can definitely influence the mind of the reader. A two-liner objective describing your unique skill/s would suffice the need.

Education-
Here comes one of the most important sections of your resume. Employers very often have specific educational requirements for the profile. Mention your qualifications in chronological order. Remember to include the year of passing and percentage of marks scored. Also, make sure to include the name of the school/university and special honors you received during the course, if any.

Work Experience (Omit if you are a fresher and focus more on the Objective part)-
Definitely the most looked for section of your resume. Employers, most of the times have specific experience requirements in the profile for which you are ought to be considered. Be sure of including the below-mentioned points-

  1. Name of the company/companies worked with
  2. Duration (first and last date) of your association with each company
  3. Job responsibilities
  4. Job title
  5. Reason for quitting the prior job (most important of all)
  6. Current CTC
  7. Rewards and recognitions received during the performance of the job

Other Skills-
Now, who doesn’t want extra? If you are proficient with different languages, you definitely have an upper hand while applying in Multinational companies. If a bank teller is being looked for, your chances definitely enhance if you are efficient in currency counting and recognizing fake bank notes.

Hobbies-
Give yourself an extra edge if you find that your hobbies and interests relate to the job profile. In case spending time on social networking websites is your hobby, you can be considered prior to your competitors for online marketing role.

What and how to, and what not to say-
Tell how the recruiter can benefit from your skills-
Keep in mind, every applicant will say that he/she is the most appropriate for the job. Tell the recruiter how. Mention how your academic qualifications and/or experience make/s you the most apt contender. Here, remember not giving illusive forecasts like “The Company’s turnover will increase by 200% post my association.”

Define your achievements using numbers-
Numbers can be your friends. Telling that post your association with your current company the retrenchment rate declined by 40% will surely make an impression. Don’t be vague and try to give comprehensive information.

Stay away from negativity-
The most important point to focus on. Do not write in your resume what you do not prefer. Saying that, I prefer day jobs and avoid working late, reveals that you aren’t always ready to work beyond normal hours even when the situation demands. Also, do not criticize the management of your previous organization or the incompetence of your reporting manager.

Relevant information in the beginning-
When you know that experience in the relevant profile is a criterion of selection, write about your expertise. Plus, mention your achievements and the rewards you secured while working in the same profile.

Recognize bottlenecks of the employer-
Tell how you can prove beneficial for the recruiter in the current market scenarios. In case the company is struggling with decline in sales due to change in customers’ taste, mention how your market research attribute can help to cope up with the situation.

Give references-
You can mention the names, designation, and contact numbers of your previous and current managers. This creates an impression that your achievements are backed up by relevant evidence. Here, be sure of avoiding those references which you believe would not turn supportive.

Take an expert review prior to submitting-
Asking for suggestions is never bad. You do not lose anything, rather you gain most of the times. You can send a draft to your senior in office and ask for feedback. This makes you understand how others would react after reading your resume and the impression your resume creates.

Do not make false statements-
Though you may be able to impress the recruiter by adding false experience or references, remember that most of the times these are verified. You may lose your new job in case you fail to backup the attributes you mentioned in the resume. Rather, be honest.

Be sure about accuracy of spellings and grammar-

Begin with the purpose of your sending-
Let the Recipient be aware of the reason of your writing in the very beginning. You can start with sentences like, ‘I am writing to apply for the position of Senior Manager in your Chicago unit.’ Do not start with abrupt words like ‘Hi, How are you?’ Instead, inform the Recipient in the starting why he/she should go through the entire message.

Be precise and clear-
Respect the time and efforts of the Recipient. Do not frame too long sentences. Try to be brief, yet informative. Plus, do not confuse the reader with your message. Be clear enough so as to extract what you expect. ‘Your advertisement dated 23 July 2008 inviting the applications for the position of Human Resource Manager has really interested me and I would be grateful if you can consider me for this role’. You can shorten this by writing ‘I would like to be considered for the position of HR Manager as per your advertisement dated 23 July 2008’.

Give a comprehensive picture-
While in a hurry of replying to your Boss or the job consultant, you may miss information that is being looked for. Many a times, you would be required to answer multiple questions. For instance, job consultants ask for your Experience, Academic Qualifications, Current CTC, Expected CTC, Notice period, etc. While replying, make sure that you have answered all that is asked. Else, your application may be turned down without giving you a chance to recover.
